The summer months are often long, hot, and boring for kids and adults alike. The first few weeks are always fun, but after awhile watching TV gets tiring. While kids can enjoy camps and summer sports, senior citizens find themselves with far less to do. At Lear Senior Care, we believe that summer should be fun no matter what your age. Here are a few activities any senior will enjoy.
Getting exercise is important for older people. Aging is hard on your body but keeping it active makes it a little easier. Metal detecting is a fun hobby that’s easy to do and interesting. Purchase an inexpensive metal detector and head to a park or nature trail to test it out. If you end up really enjoying it, upgrade to a nicer one. Remember to carry a bottle of water with you and wear lots of sunscreen outdoors!
If you love being outdoors and enjoying the pool, then you need to try out water aerobics. Many community pools offer water aerobics classes specifically for senior citizens. This exercise is great for your muscles and gets you out among other people. It’s also a great way to stay cool even if you’re outdoors.
Volunteer to Help Children Read
Kids that struggle with reading are often embarrassed to read in front of their class. During the summer, kids who are behind their classmates in this area often attend special classes to get them up to speed. Independent or assisted reading is usually part of these classes. Consider volunteering to help children with their reading assignments over the summer. Your community center might be able to match with the right volunteer opportunity!
Start a Scrapbooking Club
When you get to a certain age, you have more photos than you know what to do with. Preserving memories and photos for your kids and grandkids is a wonderful gift your family will appreciate. Get a few friends together once or twice a week to scrapbook or put together photo albums. Being crafty and creative while enjoying each other’s company is a nice way to spend the summer.
